Something New
It's no wonder so many people begin an exercise routine and give up after only a few months. Having worked in the fitness industry for over 13 years, I've been part of the mass influx of new members in January and then, right about this time every year, the mass exodus. Why does this happen? How can we, as the fitness professional, help clients and members make fitness & exercise something they look forward to? Think about how client retention would skyrocket if we had people leaving a workout thinking "Wow, that was fun!" We look forward to Friday nights (TGIF), to the next episode of The X Factor and sleeping in on Sunday mornings. Why don't we look forward to moving our bodies with functional exercise, especially since the vast majority of us sit on our backsides 40+ hours a week? We need to tap into that innate part of us that wants to move, run, jump and play using our bodyweight as exercise instead of making a workout a chore that has to be checked off. How is it that some grow to love the physical exertion, you what I'm talking about, those gym rats you see every time you step into the facility, and other, actually the majority of those New Year's Resolutioners, absolutely hate the gym and physical activity? Why have we lost the ability to have fun when making our bodies do functional movements such as skipping, hopping, climbing and jumping? Remember the days of tearing through the front door, making your living room an obstacle course while slinging your backpack through the kitchen, jumping over the dog and heading straight back outside while mom yelled "be back before the sun goes down"? That's the kind of enthusiasm we need to bring back in the exercise world. We can site all the medical reasons but simply put, it feels good to blow off steam and get the body moving in ways it used to, functionally.
Cut through all the boring workouts. After all, your clients have either just come from or are going to work so, why not make fitness the highlight of their day? Think logically, your clients get paid to 'WORK' but, now they have to pay to 'WORKout'? No wonder it seems like another obstacle in their day to get through. Give them an experience at teh gym, park or studio that they look forward to each day. Use equipment that mimics things they used to have fun doing as a kid. Think about it, most of us were not overweight as a kid. We moved, played, had fun and looked forward to it! Get your clients up off of machinesand move them! So many things have come out to help give our clientsan experience not just a workout. Start using equipment that sets you apart from the average trainer. Have your clients talking about their workout to everyone they know even other members, especially those that hate exercise. ViPRs are awesome tools to get the entire system moving and working, Sandbells allow your clients to toss, throw and slam things, suspension trainers, like Serius Straps, get us using bodyweight for resistance and the Railyard Obstacle Course combines function, balance, cardio and resistance all together! Use the equipment together or alone, just use it! You can even plan a whole body workout without equipment. Here's a great small gorup workout I used lasat week:
Body Weight Exercises: Equipment Exercises:
Body Weight Squats Railyard Quickovers
Bear Crawls ViPR Lateral Lunge-Twist
Push Ups Railyard Travelling Step Ups with ViPR Press
Reverse Lunge Railyard Travelling Push Ups
Crab Hip Extensions Railyard Walking Lunge w/Sandbell Pass Under
Vary the weights, vary the way the exercise is performed, or the time under tension and your next session is fun, functional and full body!
Let me know what your clients think...

What is the Best Age to Incorporate Sports into a Kid's Life?
Individual sports, youth fitness and exercise activities that are not team sports should be incorporated into your kids’ lives as soon as the children show an interest. Young children need to learn the importance of physical fitness and exercise. They could begin their fitness training with the Railyard Fitness Playtangle or Railyard Obstacle course.
Both of these fitness tools can be purchased for convenient home use to get your children in the habit of exercising. The best thing about Railyard fitness equipment is that you can exercise along with your children while setting a positive example. Not only is exercise the best way to keep your kids fit, it is also essential for the development of high self-esteem. If your children use Railyard fitness equipment at home they are likely to develop the confidence to try team sports later on
and to continue being physically active.
Sedentary Kids. There is no question that today’s youth lack exercise. Childhood obesity is at an all time high and has contributed to chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, in children. Due to budgetary restraints, youth fitness and exercise programs have been placed on the back burner in many schools. Physical education classes and school sports have been reduced. Too many kids lead somewhat sedentary lifestyles.
Healthy Families. Kids need some form of exercise everyday. Are your children getting the exercise they need? Are they at risk for health problems because they lack fitness? Do you motivate your kids to exercise? Have you created a healthy family lifestyle? If not, it is time for your family to embrace fitness and exercise. Railyard fitness offers a variety of exercise courses and fitness equipment to meet your family’s needs.
Kids are never too young to be taught the value of good health. Start exercising with your children and encourage them to participate in age appropriate sports. If your kids are not interested in joining sports activities, you will need to find ways to incorporate exercise into your lifestyle. Ride bicycles, roller skate, or go for daily walks together as a family. Buy a set of jump ropes for quick workouts at home. Whatever you do make fitness and exercise a priority for your family.

The Importance of Mentally Preparing for a Workout
Fun And Movement the Premier Qualities to a Successful Youth Strength and Fitness Program
When searching for the proper exercise equipment, the Railyard Fitness exercise unit is a great new way to get the most out of your fitness program. Imagine getting a great workout while feeling like you're on a playground instead. The Railyard Fitness allows you to move freely and perform different exercises on equipment that resembles a schoolyard jungle gym, making exercising an experience that no longer needs to resemble hard work. While still getting you the results you want, the Railyard Fitness can make anyone at any age feel just like a kid again, making the actual act of working out perfect for youth fitness and exercise.
Keeping workouts lively and entertaining is the key to keeping youth interested in staying in shape, and with the seemingly unlimited possibilities Railyard Fitness allows, your fitness program can take the shape of a day in the schoolyard. The results you want are still there, with exercises that work on an infinite number of areas, depending on what you want to focus on. Don't limit yourself to the same exercises and equipment that can make any program feel redundant and routine. The key to a successful youth fitness and exercise program is by shaking things up, while at the same time providing participants with the best results possible.
Even though Railyard Fitness equipment is a truly professional tool, exercising doesn't become a strenuous or aggravating experience. With a number of accessories allowing everything ranging from cardio to strength exercises utilizing Serius Straps, the ways in which Railyard Fitness can add to a fitness program are all left to the individual. Whether you're a thirty-year-old professional trainer or a high school football player, exercising should be a youthful experience and Railyard Fitness can benefit any workout program tremendously by connecting the generations.
Routine is not what exercising is about, but rather it's about building individuals' strength and agility through means that don't feel repetitive. Making fitness programs that work for the individual's needs and wants should be enabled, with evolving and innovative workouts that help gradual development while straying from becoming bland. Railyard Fitness helps to accomplish this, integrated into an overall effective program.
While the objective of the gym is to provide professional service when it comes to working out, a good youth fitness and exercise program should be youthful in both practice and environment, not daunting and uninteresting. Keep your fitness programs alive and active by making them stimulating. Railyard Fitness is one such assistant that can make this happen.

The 6 Fundamental Components of Railyard Fitness
Children move with their environment every day wherever they are without thinking about it (unless restricted from doing so by adults). Many popular adult exercise programs allow them to get out of their comfort zone, be child-like with a fun exercise, and allow their bodies to move the way they were intended to move. Any adult or youth fitness exercise program can integrate a great workout with Railyard Active Play.
Can Railyard Active Play Build Kids Muscular Strength?
Building muscular strength is the most long-lasting and effective when it is done using the entire body. Railyard Active Play provides strategies for sports conditioning for kids that are built around using body weight and gravity for resistance, with techniques that resemble playing. We've probably all done these techniques at one time or another - either on the playground, in yoga, or in an aerobics studio: vaults, hip raises, alligators, inchworms. These exercises resemble play but they're also implemented in a way that replicates normal movements of the human body - the body was designed to move as an well-connected system.

Railyard voted MVP again!
I'm proud to announce we've been chosen as one of the Most Valuable Products in PE once AGAIN! Attendees at the 2010 PE4life / IBC Adopt-a-School Challenge Summit in Des Moines Iowa voted, and the Railyard Conditioning Course tied for first place with EKHO Heart Rate Monitors. We received 3 top 2 finishes at three recent PE conferences and we couldn't be more proud or appreciative.
Have you read the book, "Spark, The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain"? If you haven't, I highly recommend you do. It gives everyone in physical education and fitness added justification to continue our mission of exercise and fitness. The author, John Ratey, MD, describes the process by which vigorous exercise enhances the learning process and why. It a fascinating read and adds one more reason for a daily workout. In the book you'll read about the PE program in Naperville, Ill. that "Sparked" Dr. Ratey's interest. Two, very progressive PE teachers in Naperville started what they call, “New PE", whereby every child exercises one hour every day. Their program fostered much healthier children, Naperville schools are among the lowest in obesity in the nation, it produced a noticeable increase in academic achievement. Were proud to have Railyard in use in Naperville and to be a part of this exciting achievement.
More and more documented results verifying this is published daily as to the positive affect exercise has on a children learning ability. What is the problem people? Exercise helps children learn, exercise makes children healthier, America wants smarter and healthier children, seems to me part of the answer exercise. Let us, as a nation, support the PE programs in our schools and we’ll get what we strive for, a healthy generation of children that could reverse the predictions and become the longest living generation. We’ll be doing everything in our power, will you join us?
Our 80-page youth and kids fitness manual is now available online, download it free. It’s a wonderful tool for PE teachers, fitness professionals, parents, anyone who is interested in joining the effort to develop a healthier U.S.

Our hope is the Railyard Depot becomes a valuable forum where physical educators and fitness professionals will share information on their successes and trials in providing exercise for our nations children. Please write your thoughts down send them to us, and we will include them in the next month’s issue.
The fitness equipment manufacturers, distributors, and retailers, are forming a trade association (Afirm) to promote fitness and exercise. The Association will be a part of the SGMA, one of the leading proponents of the PEP Grant and the PHIT bill. As a founding member, I intend to encourage the industry to take a larger role in supporting Physical Education and fitness for children. What can the fitness industry do to help you provide exercise and fitness to your students and clients? Please post your suggestions on the Railyard Depot Blog and I’ll present them to the Association.
We are proud to announce the National Head Start/Body Start Program has selected our preschool exercise program and product, the Playtangle Jr. to be included in the 2010 Resource Guide. The Playtangle is manufactured and distributed by our parent Company, TherapyZone.com.

There are over 200 facilities around the country using the Railyard as an obstacle course for their children’s fitness and youth exercise programs. A number of these Courses are being used to provide conditioning for youth athletes. We believe this is how children should be developing their foundational and athletic skills. The exercises on the course and naturally functional and fun, both necessary for a successful conditioning program.
We will give away a $3500.00 Railyard on January 20, 2010 to one lucky "Railyard Depot" subscriber, go to our website to sign up and good luck!
